Getting Started in Custom Programming for Sourcing Purposes

Sourcers often recruit programmers to create products that drive their company forward, but what if you could do the same to drive your company's recruiting forward?  Numerous opportunities exist to go beyond or fill gaps that off-the-shelf software cannot provide, at no cost.  While you won't emerge from this session as a top coder, you'll learn how to scale the initial barriers to take your career to the next level and make you uniquely (in)valuable to employers:

  • Why you need a free GitHub account to take advantage of today's stuff & how to use it as a coder
  • What free software you need to install (Apple or Windows) for Python, today's hottest language + recommended free code editors that handle various languages
  • Step-by-step through a couple of novice-level JavaScript bookmarklets and Excel VBA examples that you can build on
  • Where to find more free sourcer-relevant scripts you can easily adapt without deep programming knowledge
  • Where to go for additional free programming coursework to complement what you'll learn from peers
  • Who in the sourcing community you should get to know to continue your programming journey

Building Software Products: Breaking down the process into simple steps

You have a great idea and the know how of what needs to be built.  How do you do it?  What is the first step?  What are the pitfalls to avoid?

In this session, Donato will lay out practical processes that were used to build products at Broadlook and Later RingLead Inc.  Donato's creations support over 10,000 recruiting and sales clients worldwide.  In this session, Donato will cover:

  • Acid testing your idea.  Is it for internal use or will you have customers?
  • You are a recruiter... but do you know how to recruit a contractor with the right skills.
  • Testing quickly and why:  don't create from "the cave"
  • Building for the future.  Avoid "technical debt" by thinking of additional applications for your idea.
  • Step by step through the creation of web crawling app, built in Excel!

Who should attend?

Recruiters that want to get more into the technical side.  You don't have to be a programmer to get something out of this session.  The core message is leverage your strengths and learn tips and tricks that will allow you to collaboratively bring your idea to realization.
